CORPORATE WORKSPACE 02
JOHN MCENROE

A tribute to the tennis legend's dominant career, his rebellious attitude, his artful approach to the game, and his enduring influence on the Nike brand.
Turn your volume up.

Each floor of the John McEnroe building features a different artist’s work inspired by tennis and McEnroe’s game. Graffiti artists @_revok_ and @biscosmith each transformed the office space with amazing floor-to-ceiling murals as captured in these videos created by the talented @wiseknave.

OVERVIEW

The John McEnroe building on the Nike WHQ campus remained untouched for 30 years. It was no longer functioning for employees and was outdated.

As a lifelong fan of John McEnroe, this project was particularly special to me. To have the opportunity to give McEnroe himself a tour of his own building was a life highlight. Our primary objective for the branding program of the renovated space was to pay homage to the tennis legend's dominant career, his rebellious attitude, his artful approach to the game, and his enduring influence on the Nike brand. We wanted to inform and inspire current and future employees while enriching the corporate culture through storytelling and art.

With this building, and several others we completed around the same time, we commissioned artists to create unique, timeless, and sport-inspired floor-to-ceiling murals, which infused the workspace with much-needed energy and soul. Working with artists @_revok_, @biscosmith, @felipepantone, @alexis_jamet, and @crystalzapata was a true honor, and each brought a unique perspective to the project. The investment in these "art programs" was successful in terms of their cultural impact while also being a more timeless and sustainable solution that used fewer materials than typical brand executions.

BRAND HIGHLIGHTS

NEON quote McEnroe loved the two-story neon sign we created for the atrium that read "You cannot be serious," his most famous quote from the time he disputed a line call during a 1981 Wimbledon match.

1984 LIBRARY AND COFFEE TABLE The "1984" library adjacent to the lobby was wrapped in the names of every player McEnroe defeated on his way to achieving his incredible 82-3 match record that year, a record he still holds to this day.

Inside the library, victory photos of McEnroe kissing his trophies lined the walls, and an oversized coffee table made of broken wooden racquets from the 80s paid tribute to his infamous on-court antics.

MCENROE WALLPAPER On floors two through four, we incorporated MCENROE’S ICONIC quotes, and his nike LOGOS, products and ads IN OFFICES, MEETING SPACES, PHONE ROOMS AND BOOTHS.
