CORPORATE wayfinding
whq
A modern signage system helping guests navigate a sprawling campus.
OVERVIEW
Nike’s World Headquarters had grown from a campus with under 20 buildings in the 90s, to 77 buildings spread across eight campuses in Beaverton and Hillsboro, Oregon, in 2020, increasing the need for signage to help connect the architecturally disparate on and off-campus sites.
The WD+C branding team created a comprehensive signage system to assist with wayfinding across the Nike WHQ campus. This included directional signs for both vehicles and pedestrians, as well as markers for campus and building identification, shuttle stops, trailheads, and parking areas.
Consistent with the ethos of the original campus, the team designed the physical signage to be visually integrated within the landscape. The perforated metal was both visually and physically lightweight and the pattern was based off of the iconic 26 degree angle of the Nike Windrunner jacket.
By layering the perforations, the signs gained strength and stability, and the resulting moiré effect added a subtle dynamic quality. This design was first introduced with the Tailwind Air Manufacturing project and later implemented at scale across the WHQ campus.
